Baguio City and the broader Benguet province are bracing for significant rainfall, potential widespread flooding, and dangerous landslides as the Southwest Monsoon continues to intensify over the coming days. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Weather Advisory No. 28 on August 29, 2026, outlining a heavy rainfall outlook extending until September 1.
According to the advisory, Benguet is expected to experience varying intensities of rain, posing considerable risks to residents and infrastructure. From today, August 29, until tomorrow afternoon, August 30, parts of Benguet are projected to receive rainfall between 100-200 mm, leading to numerous flooding events and likely landslides. Other areas within the province could see 50-100 mm, making localized flooding and possible landslides a concern, particularly in highly susceptible areas.
The monsoon’s impact is forecast to continue through the weekend. Between tomorrow afternoon (August 30) and Monday afternoon (August 31), Benguet is again under a 100-200 mm rainfall projection, raising alarms for persistent flooding in urbanized, low-lying, or river-adjacent areas, along with a high likelihood of landslides.
As the week begins, from Monday afternoon (August 31) to Tuesday afternoon (September 1), parts of Benguet are still expected to receive 50-100 mm, with other areas potentially hitting the 100-200 mm mark. This continuous rainfall pattern increases the cumulative risk, especially given that precipitation in mountainous and elevated regions, such as those found in Benguet, often surpasses general forecast levels. Significant antecedent rainfall can also worsen these impacts.
Authorities urge the public and local disaster risk reduction and management offices to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property. Residents in areas prone to flooding and landslides are strongly advised to monitor local advisories, prepare emergency kits, and be ready for immediate evacuation if conditions worsen.
PAGASA reiterated that regional services may issue specific Heavy Rainfall Warnings or Thunderstorm Advisories as needed. The next national weather advisory is expected to be issued at 11:00 PM tonight, August 29, 2026.
