Tropical Storm Fung-Wong to Enter PAR by Friday or Saturday

Tropical StormFung-Wong continues to move northwestward near Yap, Micronesia, while slightly intensifying. The system remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) but is expected to enter within the next 24 to 36 hours. Once inside, it will be given the local name “Uwan.”

• Location of Center (10:00 AM): 1,690 km East of Northeastern Mindanao (9.7°N, 140.9°E) — Outside PAR
• Intensity: Maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 90 km/h, and central pressure of 996 hPa
• Present Movement: Northwestward at 10 km/h
• Extent of Winds: Strong to gale-force winds extend outwards up to 700 km from the center

General Outlook for the Forecast Period

• The tropical storm will continue moving northwestward today before turning west northwestward for the remainder of the forecast period.
• On the forecast track, Fung-Wong is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday (07 November) late evening or Saturday (08 November) early morning, and will be named Uwan once it enters.
• Forecast models indicate an increasing chance of landfall over Northern or Central Luzon on Monday (10 November).
• Rapid intensification is likely, with the system potentially reaching typhoon category by Friday and super typhoon category by Saturday, possibly making landfall at or near its peak intensity.

Potential Impacts on Land

• Wind Signals: May be raised over the eastern portion of Luzon and parts of the Samar provinces as early as Friday evening or Saturday morning, in anticipation of strong winds or higher associated with the approaching cyclone. The highest possible wind signal under the current forecast scenario is Signal No. 5.
• Weather Conditions: Deterioration of weather is expected by Sunday (09 November). Potentially life-threatening stormy conditions may occur over Northern and Central Luzon on Monday (10 November) and Tuesday (11 November).
• Coastal Flooding: There is potential for high storm surge risk and coastal flooding, especially along the eastern coasts of Northern and Central Luzon. Storm surge warnings may be issued by Saturday (08 November).

Marine Hazards

• Moderate to rough seas may begin to affect the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao by Friday or Saturday.
• Western and southern seaboards of Luzon may experience rough conditions by Saturday or Sunday.
• Hazardous sea conditions (very rough to phenomenal seas) are expected to impact most of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas beginning Sunday onward. Gale Warnings for coastal waters may be issued on Saturday.
