Rainy Season Officially Begins in the Philippines – PAGASA

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially declared the onset of the rainy season on June 2, 2025. According to the latest weather analysis and rainfall data, the country has experienced scattered to widespread rain over the past five days, particularly across the western sections of Luzon and Visayas. These conditions were primarily brought about by the strengthening of the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.

What Signals the Start of the Rainy Season?

PAGASA observed that the consistent rains over the past week meet the established criteria for declaring the start of the rainy season. These include:

• A transition from the easterlies to the southwest monsoon,
• Significant rainfall recorded in various PAGASA stations,
• Prevailing wind patterns shifting to southwesterlies.

What to Expect During the Rainy Season

While the rainy season is now underway, PAGASA also noted that monsoon breaks- or extended periods of little to no rain- may still occur in the coming weeks. These breaks are a normal part of the monsoon cycle and should not be mistaken as the end of the season.

During this period, the public is urged to remain vigilant. The rainy season is typically associated with an increased risk of:

• Rain-induced landslides
• Disruptions in travel and transportation
• Potential damage to crops and infrastructure
