Archaeologists Discovers Mummy with Gold Tongue in Egypt

The team of archeologists working for the Egyptian-Dominican mission of the University of Santo Domingo which was headed by Dr. Kathleen Martinez has discovered 16 burials in the rock-cut tombs in Taposiris Magna Temple in Western Alexandria. And, one of the discoveries is a mummy with a golden tongue that is said to be placed to ensure that the dead would be able to speak in the afterlife.

The said burial shafts were popular in the Greek and Roman eras according to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

What’s Within the Burial Shafts?

• A number of mummies in a poor state of preservation were discovered within these shafts.
• Inside is what highlights the characteristics of mummification in the Greek and Roman eras
• Remnants of gilded cartonnage in addition to amulets of gold foil in the form of a tongue that were placed in the mouth of the mummy in a special ritual.

Two Most Important Important Mummies Discovered

It was explained by Dr. Matinez that among the discovered  mummies these are the two most important mummies that preserved the remains of scrolls and parts of the cartonnage:
