Typhoon Francisco Strengthens, Signal No. 1 Raised in Parts of Northern Luzon

Weather Update as of 5:00 AM, June 22, 2026

Typhoon Francisco has intensified further while accelerating west-northwestward over the Philippine Sea.

As of 4:00 AM, the center of the typhoon was located 715 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. It is moving west-northwestward at 30 kilometers per hour.

Francisco now has maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h near the center, with gusts reaching 170 km/h.

Areas Under Wind Signal No. 1

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is currently raised over:

  • Batanes
  • Northeastern Cagayan, particularly Gonzaga and Santa Ana
  • Eastern Babuyan Islands, including Babuyan Island, Didicas Island, and Camiguin Island

These areas may experience winds of 39 to 61 km/h within the next 36 hours, along with intermittent rains.

Minimal to minor wind damage is possible, especially in coastal, mountainous, and other exposed areas. Some makeshift houses, banana plants, tree branches, and flowering rice crops may be affected.

What to Expect from Typhoon Francisco

Francisco is expected to remain over the Philippine Sea throughout the forecast period. However, it may move closer to Extreme Northern Luzon if its track shifts farther west.

The typhoon is forecast to continue moving west-northwestward until Tuesday, June 23. It will then slow down, turn northward and northeastward, and may leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Friday, June 26.

Francisco may continue to intensify and reach its peak strength by Tuesday before gradually weakening.

Based on the current forecast, the typhoon’s center may pass about **265 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes by early Wednesday morning**.

Strong Monsoon Winds

Even areas far from the center of Francisco may experience strong winds because the typhoon is enhancing the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.

Strong to gale-force gusts are possible today over:

La Union, Pangasinan, CALABARZON, Romblon, Masbate, most of the Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte, Camiguin, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Davao Occidental, and Davao Oriental.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, strong monsoon winds may affect most parts of Luzon and the Visayas, including several areas in Mindanao.

Rainfall Warning

Heavy rains may still affect areas outside the typhoon’s projected path due to its wide circulation and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon.

Residents should monitor local rainfall advisories, especially those living near rivers, mountains, steep slopes, and areas prone to flooding or landslides.

Dangerous Sea Conditions

Rough seas with waves reaching 3.5 meters are expected along the eastern coasts of the Babuyan Islands and mainland Cagayan.

Waves of up to 3 meters may affect the eastern seaboards of Batanes and Isabela.

Small vessels, including motorbancas, should not venture out to sea in these areas, especially those that are inexperienced or poorly equipped.

Moderate seas with waves between 2 and 2.5 meters are also expected along several coastal areas of Northern Luzon, Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Davao Oriental.

Safety Reminders

Residents in affected areas are advised to:

* Inspect and repair weak portions of their homes.
* Clear canals, gutters, and drainage systems.
* Secure light objects that may be blown away.
* Harvest crops that are ready for collection.
* Avoid unnecessary sea travel.
* Prepare emergency supplies and charge communication devices.
* Monitor the latest PAGASA bulletins and local government advisories.

Businesses and regular activities may continue in areas under Signal No. 1, unless flooding, strong winds, or local authorities require suspension.

The next tropical cyclone advisory is expected at 11:00 AM today, June 22.
