Typhoon “Chedeng” Starts to Weaken, Continues North Northeastward

Typhoon “Chedeng,” also known as Guchol, has begun to weaken as it moves north-northeastward, according to the 11:00 PM bulletin from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Current Status and Path

As of 10:00 PM today, the center of Typhoon Chedeng was located approximately 910 km east of Extreme Northern Luzon. The typhoon’s intensity has decreased, with maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 170 km/h. The central pressure is reported at 965 hPa.

Chedeng is currently moving north-northeastward at 15 km/h. The typhoon’s strong to typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 520 km from the center.

Land and Coastal Hazards

Rainfall and Wind Forecast

Though Chedeng is unlikely to bring heavy rainfall directly to the country within the next three days, its enhancement of the Southwest Monsoon will result in occasional to monsoon rains over the western portions of Luzon and Visayas in the coming days.

The hoisting of wind signals in anticipation of tropical cyclone severe winds is still deemed unnecessary at this time. However, the enhancement of the Southwest Monsoon may cause gusty conditions over areas, particularly those exposed to winds, including Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and others tonight and in the following days.

Sea Conditions

Over the next 24 hours, Chedeng may induce moderate to rough seas (2.0 to 3.0 m) over the seaboard of Extreme Northern Luzon. Small seacraft operators are advised to take precautionary measures, and inexperienced or ill-equipped vessels should avoid sailing in these conditions.

Future Predictions for Path and Intensity

In its current forecast track, Chedeng is expected to remain far from the Philippine landmass and is likely to accelerate north-northeastward or northeastward. The typhoon is projected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by tomorrow evening or early Monday morning.

Chedeng’s weakening trend is due to the increasingly unfavorable environment. It is anticipated to be downgraded into a severe tropical storm within the next 36 hours.

The next bulletin on Typhoon Chedeng will be issued at 5:00 AM tomorrow.
