Tropical Storm “FUNG-WONG” Slightly Intensifies as It Moves Northwestward

Tropical Storm FUNG-WONG continues to move northwestward while slightly intensifying over the Pacific Ocean. The system remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) but is expected to enter late Friday evening or early Saturday and will be given the local name “Uwan.”

As of 10:00 PM, the center of Tropical StormFUNG-WONG was estimated at 1,550 km east of Northeastern Mindanao (10.4°N, 139.6°E). The storm has maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 105 km/h, and a central pressure of 992 hPa. It is currently moving northwestward at 20 km/h.

Strong to gale-force winds extend outward up to 720 km from the center, indicating a wide circulation that may influence sea conditions ahead of its entry into the PAR.

Track and Intensity Outlook

FUNG-WONG is forecast to enter the PAR by late Friday (November 7) or early Saturday (November 8) and will be named “Uwan” once inside.

The tropical cyclone is expected to rapidly intensify, reaching typhoon category by Friday and possibly super typhoon strength by Saturday. Forecast models suggest a potential landfall over Northern or Central Luzon on Monday, November 10, possibly at or near peak intensity.

However, forecasts for days four to five remain subject to significant uncertainty. Continuous monitoring of official updates from PAGASA is strongly advised.

Hazards Affecting Land Areas

• Wind Signals:
  Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) may be raised over the eastern portions of Luzon and Samar provinces as early as Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
  The highest possible signal level for the current scenario is Signal No. 5.
• Weather Deterioration:
  Rain and strong winds may begin to affect Luzon starting Sunday (November 9), with potentially life-threatening storm conditions over Northern and Central Luzon on Monday (November 10) and Tuesday (November 11).
• Storm Surge:
  There is a high storm surge risk along the northern and eastern coastlines of Luzon, with possible coastal flooding. Storm surge warnings may be issued as early as Saturday.

Hazards Affecting Coastal Waters

• Friday to Saturday:
  Moderate to rough seas are expected over the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao.
• Saturday to Sunday:
  Sea conditions along the western and southern coasts of Luzon may turn moderate to rough by mid-Saturday or Sunday.
  By Sunday onwards, very rough to high seas are likely over most of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas.
  Gale warnings may be issued beginning Saturday.
