Tropical Depression Huaning Forms East of Batanes




Tropical Depression Huaning developed east northeast of Batanes early this morning, August 18, 2025, according to PAGASA.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the country’s official weather bureau, reported that the low-pressure area east northeast of Batanes developed into Tropical Depression Huaning at 2:00 AM today, August 18, 2025.

Track and Intensity Outlook

  • Location (as of 4:00 AM): 520 km east northeast of Itbayat, Batanes (22.3°N, 126.6°E)
  • Intensity: Maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center, gusts up to 55 km/h
  • Central Pressure: 1008 hPa
  • Movement: North northwestward at 10 km/h
  • Extent of Winds: Strong winds extend outward up to 270 km from the center




Huaning is forecast to move generally northward until tonight and then gradually turn north northeastward by early tomorrow toward the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. On this track, it may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) between late tonight and tomorrow morning. It is expected to remain a tropical depression throughout the forecast period.

  • Severe Winds: Huaning is unlikely to directly affect the country within the next 48 hours.

Hazards Affecting Coastal Waters

  • Moderate seas (up to 2.0 meters) may be experienced over:
    • The seaboards of Batanes
    • The northern and western seaboards of Babuyan Islands and Ilocos Norte
    • The western seaboards of Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Lubang Island, and Palawan
  • Mariners of small vessels such as motor bancas are advised to take precautionary measures or avoid venturing into these conditions.
