PAGASA Declares Onset of Rainy Season

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has just announced the onset of the rainy season in the country on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.

Administrator Vicente Malano stated that widespread rains during the last five days in areas under Type I climate and other parts of the country have been observed due to the presence of a frontal system and the occurrence of severe thunderstorms. Southwesterly wind flow was also observed during the past few days, which satisfies the criteria needed to declare the start of rainy season over western sections of Luzon and Visayas.

According to the weather bureau, intermittent rains associated with the Southwest monsoon will start affecting Metro Manila and the western sections of the country.

In the next coming months, the probability of near to above normal rainfall conditions is increased in some parts of the country due to the ongoing La Niña. However, monsoon breaks or breaks in rainfall events, which can last for several days or weeks, may still occur, said the weather agency.
