Neneng Slightly Weakens; Habagat to Bring More Rain Over Luzon

Tropical Depression Neneng slightly weakened as it moved west northwestward over the sea east of central Taiwan, according to PAGASA’s Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued at 5:00 PM today, August 19, 2026.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat continues to bring the threat of heavy rainfall and strong winds over parts of the country, with 100 to 200 mm of rain forecast over Pangasinan, Zambales, and Bataan through Thursday afternoon.

Neneng Slightly Weakens

As of 4:00 PM, the center of Tropical Depression Neneng was estimated at 375 km northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.

Neneng now has maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center, down from 55 km/h in the previous bulletin. Gustiness is up to 55 km/h, while strong winds extend outward up to 420 km from the center.

The tropical depression is moving west northwestward at 35 km/h.

No Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal is currently hoisted.

Heavy Rainfall Outlook Due to Habagat

 

In Weather Advisory No. 72 issued at 5:00 PM, PAGASA forecast the following accumulated rainfall due to the Southwest Monsoon:

PAGASA noted that rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas. The impacts of additional rainfall may also be worsened in areas that have already received significant amounts of rain.

 

Strong to Gale-Force Gusts

 

Habagat is also expected to bring strong to gale-force gusts, particularly in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds.

 

Today until Thursday, August 20: Most of Luzon and Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Davao Region.

 

Friday, August 21: Most of Luzon, Panay Island, Negros Occidental, Northern Samar, and Davao Oriental.

Rough Seas Over Northern and Western Luzon

Rough seas of up to 3.5 meters are forecast over the seaboards of Ilocos Norte and Batanes.

Waves of up to 3 meters are expected over the seaboards of Ilocos Sur, La Union, Zambales and Lubang Islands, as well as portions of the seaboards of the Babuyan Islands, Pangasinan, Bataan, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Calamian Island and Kalayaan Islands.

Mariners of motorbancas and similarly sized vessels are advised to take precautions and, if possible, avoid navigating under these conditions.

Neneng May Approach Northern Taiwan

Neneng is forecast to move generally northwestward and may pass close to or make landfall over the northern coast of Taiwan by Thursday evening or early Friday morning.

PAGASA said Neneng’s center will remain over the Philippine Sea throughout the forecast period.

The tropical depression is expected to maintain its classification during the next 24 hours before weakening into a remnant low over or near Taiwan on Friday morning, although earlier weakening remains possible.

The next Tropical Cyclone Bulletin and Weather Advisory are scheduled to be issued at 11:00 PM today, August 19.
