Nando continues to move over the West Philippine Sea west of Batanes




Super Typhoon Nando has moved further away from the country and is now over the West Philippine Sea, west of Batanes.

Current Status

As of 4:00 PM, the eye of Super Typhoon Nando was located at 540 km west of Basco, Batanes (outside PAR) (20.5°N, 116.8°E). It has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h near the center, gusts of up to 230 km/h, and a central pressure of 925 hPa. It is moving west northwestward at 20 km/h. Strong to typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 750 km from the center.

Heavy Rainfall Outlook

Heavy rains will continue to be experienced in parts of Luzon due to the Southwest Monsoon enhanced by Nando. Flooding and rain-induced landslides remain possible, especially in areas that are highly susceptible.

Severe Winds

  • Minimal to minor impacts from strong winds are possible within any of the areas under Signal No. 1.
  • Owing to the large wind field of Nando, all Wind Signals will likely be lifted tonight or tomorrow.

Strong to gale-force gusts are expected in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds:

  • Tonight and tomorrow, Sept. 24: Most of Luzon, Western Visayas, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands
  • Thursday, Sept. 25: Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Palawan, Siquijor, Camiguin, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, and Davao Occidental

Coastal Waters

Very rough seas may prevail:

  • Up to 4.5 m: Seaboards of Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur

Rough seas:

  • Up to 4.0 m: Seaboard of Zambales
  • Up to 3.5 m: Eastern seaboard of mainland Cagayan; western seaboard of Bataan; seaboard of Lubang Island
  • Up to 3.0 m: Western seaboard of Occidental Mindoro, Batangas, and northern mainland Palawan; seaboard of Isabela and Kalayaan Islands; northern and western seaboards of Calamian Islands

Moderate seas:

  • Up to 2.5 m: Northern seaboard of mainland Cagayan; remaining western seaboard of mainland Palawan
  • Up to 2.0 m: Southern seaboard of Bataan; western seaboard of Cavite; remaining seaboard of Palawan including Cuyo and Cagayancillo Islands

Sea travel remains risky for small seacrafts and motorbancas. Mariners should take precautionary measures and avoid sailing in these conditions.




Coastal Inundation

The threat of storm surge has ceased.

Track and Intensity Outlook

  • Nando will continue moving west northwestward over the West Philippine Sea in the next 24 hours before turning more westward toward the waters south of mainland China.
  • It may make landfall over southern China tomorrow evening or early Thursday, Sept. 25.
  • Nando will likely maintain its strength within the next 24 hours before gradually weakening as it approaches and makes landfall over China.

Advisory

The public and disaster risk reduction offices are advised to remain vigilant against hazards from the enhanced Southwest Monsoon. Residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas should take necessary precautions and follow instructions from local authorities.
