June 28 declared as regular holiday in observance of Eid’l Adha

Through Proclamation No. 258 s. 2023, has declared Wednesday, 28 June 2023, as a regular holiday across the country in observance of Eid’l Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice. The proclamation was signed on 13 June 2023 by the Executive Secretary, Lucas Bersamin, on behalf of the President.

Eid’l Adha, also known as Eid al-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the two major holidays in Islam, the other being Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid’l Adha is considered the holier of the two feasts.

In the country, the Feast of Sacrifice has been recognized as a national holiday since the enactment of RA 9849, which declared the tenth day of Zhul Hijja, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, as a non-working holiday.

The observance of Eid’l Adha as a national holiday is a testament to the government’s commitment to upholding the principle of religious freedom and fostering unity and respect among diverse faiths. It underscores the importance of the country’s multicultural heritage and allows everyone, regardless of faith, to recognize and learn more about the cultural and religious practices of the Muslim community.

The specific date of the holiday, which is based on lunar observations, varies from year to year and from country to country. This year, the Feast of Sacrifice falls on Wednesday, 28 June 2023, as per the proclamation.
