The update that students and teachers have been waiting for is here. According to the Department of Education (DepEd), in a press briefing today, the opening of classes will be on August 24, 2020.
“Ang napili nating school opening date ay August 24,” Education Secretary Leonor Briones during the press briefing.
According to the education secretary, the chosen date for the start of this school year is still aligned with Philippine laws which state that the start of classes should be scheduled between June and August.
However, Education Secretary Briones made it clear that this doesn’t mean all students have to physically attend classes since there are still areas under lockdown.
“Pwedeng virtual, pwede ring physical sa mga lugar na ina-allow ang physical na pagbukas ng eskwelahan,” Briones said.
Aside from the official opening of classes on August 24, 2020, she also said that the school year will end on April 30, 2021.
Moreover, Sec. Briones said that their top priority is to secure the safety and well-being of students so we have to consider and follow the advice of DepEd and the policies of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF-EID).
But at the same time, she also said that we want to continue with educating them.
“Ang hirap naman kung tigilan natin ang learning process samantalang nandito ang pandemic. Dahil ang mga kabataan, habang nasa bahay, ay kailangang patuloy ang pag-aaral nila at pag-acquire ng knowledge.”
However, she also said that given this situation, parents and other guardians will be playing a bigger role in the students’ learning process.
The education secretary said that this is a great challenge for DepEd since they have to fast-track and give emphasis to the use of flexible learning options due to the pandemic.
